The UK tax system is continuing its move towards a more digital future, and Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Self Assessment is one of the biggest changes sole traders and landlords have faced in recent years. While the goal is to improve accuracy and efficiency, I understand that for many individuals and businesses this change feels overwhelming.

At Scipio Accounting Services, my role is to make these changes clear, manageable, and stress-free, while ensuring you stay compliant and focused on achieving your financial goals.

What Is Making Tax Digital for Self Assessment?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (often shortened to MTD for ITSA) is a government initiative introduced by HMRC. It requires affected taxpayers to:

• Keep digital accounting records

• Use MTD-compatible software

• Submit quarterly updates of income and expenses

• File an End of Period Statement (EOPS)

• Submit a Final Declaration replacing the traditional Self Assessment tax return

The intention is to reduce errors, give taxpayers a clearer picture of their tax position throughout the year, and modernise the tax system.

Who Will Be Affected and When?

The rollout is being introduced in stages:

  • From April 2026:

Sole traders and landlords with annual income over £50,000

  • From April 2027:

Those with annual income over £30,000

If you currently complete a Self Assessment tax return and fall within these thresholds, you will need to prepare for MTD.

Why Many Clients Feel Concerned About MTD

From speaking with clients, the most common worries include:

• Not knowing which software to use

• Fear of getting something wrong and facing penalties

• Extra time spent on admin

• Uncertainty about quarterly reporting

• Concern that digital systems will feel complicated or impersonal

These concerns are completely valid and this is exactly where professional support makes a real difference.
