Why I Started Scipio Accounting Services

Building the kind of accounting practice I believe clients deserve

I have worked in accounting and financial management for more than 30 years, but accounting was not necessarily the career I imagined for myself when I was younger.

Over the years, I have worked across a wide range of sectors and organisations. That experience has allowed me to see businesses of different sizes, operating in very different industries and facing very different challenges.

Behind every set of accounts is a person. That person may be building a business, supporting a family, employing a team or working towards a long-held ambition. They may also be worried about cash flow, confused by their tax position or simply unsure whether they are making the right decisions.

When I established Scipio Accounting Services, I wanted to create an accounting practice that recognised the person behind the figures.

Accounting should not feel intimidating

For many people, contacting an accountant can feel daunting.

They may be worried that their records are not good enough, that they have missed something important or that they will be judged for not understanding an accounting or tax rule.

I do not believe anyone should feel like that when speaking to their accountant.

Most business owners did not start their businesses because they wanted to become experts in bookkeeping, VAT or tax. They started because they were good at a trade, had a great idea or wanted to provide a particular service.

My role is to support them with the financial side of that journey.

Clients should feel comfortable asking questions, including the questions they may think are too basic to ask.

There is rarely such a thing as a silly question. More often, there is simply something that has never been explained properly.

A practice built around the client

Scipio was founded on two central values: integrity and customer commitment.

Integrity means being honest with clients, even when the answer may not be the one they were hoping to hear.

It means providing accurate advice, maintaining professional standards and always acting in the client’s best interests.

Customer commitment means taking the time to understand the individual client.

Two businesses can have similar turnover, similar costs and even operate in the same industry, but the people behind those businesses may have completely different goals.

One person may want to grow and employ a team. Another may want to create a stable income while maintaining a better work-life balance. Someone else may be building a business they eventually hope to sell.

The right accounting advice depends on understanding those ambitions.

More than a once-a-year service

I did not want Scipio to become a practice where clients only heard from their accountant once a year when their accounts or tax return were due.

Compliance is essential, but it should be the foundation of the relationship rather than the whole relationship.

I want clients to know that they can contact me when they are considering an important decision, when something changes or when they simply need a clearer explanation.

It is usually much easier to offer useful advice before a decision has been made than to try to correct a problem afterwards.

The purpose behind Scipio

The reason I established Scipio Accounting Services was to make accounting more approachable, understandable and useful.

I want clients to feel supported rather than judged. I want them to understand their financial position rather than simply being handed a set of figures. Most importantly, I want them to feel that their accountant is genuinely interested in them and their future.

The numbers will always matter.

But the person behind those numbers matters even more.
